14th September 03

| For the second time this year our open day was blessed with brilliant weather. This helped ensure near continous running from around 11am through to 10pm. Thanks to all those who came and an even bigger thanks for the donations to the local hospice which totalled over £31 | |||

Left Allan Hudnotts No.7 with the industrial cranks. After initial wiring problems this engine worked the majority of the trains. | ||
NEW BITS On previous open days we have ended up with a lawn scattered with coaches and wagons, which have been removed to stop them blocking the tracks. We deperately needed a siding. To keep in with the "railway in a garden not a garden in a railway" we have built a siding through an existing shed and coal bunker. I am sure this phrase will be quoted back to me in years to come if we keep building lines. |

| Above - The ivy covered shed hides the extent of the new siding. This siding prove its worth with the ability to remove a train from the loop without slowing things down. The bit of wood under the engine marks where the turntable will eventually go. | The coal bunker end of the siding. Not so pretty but eventually a pair of doors will hide the mess. I was the first to ride a train through -laying down on a flat wagon as there is only 550mm clearance. | ||

Left - Crossing gates. Not proper crossing gates but a self closing gate. We installed this as we have seen several near misses of people walking straight out in front of a train. Having to stop and open the gate, reduces the risk of being run over. |
||
| Right - What is it? Its a door hinge. Why is it on the track? - it is used to stop rolling stock rolling away. On our new siding we have a slight downhill to the main line. Flipping the hinge up acts as a stop. It is bent so if you accidently leave it up a train in the opposite direction will push it down out of the way. Did this after driving a train into one. |

| Right - Simon Pavit at speed. Well long exposure and a rapid start. My new Nikon cameral is great at night shots. Expect to see more in the not too distant future. |
