Single Line Working

On our own railway we have a single line section, to avoid head on collisions we operate a single line token system. On full scale systems a token is usually intergrated in to the signal system. If the single line is on a through route token apparatus is used where a token can be taken out from either end of the section. Once one token has been removed both machines lock to stop any further tokens being issued.

If all the tokens end up at one end the machine can be unlocked and tokens given to the next train to carry them to the other end of the section.

Miniature Railway Working

1 Train Running

The one train carries the token at all times although you probably won't bother unless there is a risk of another engine being introduced.

2 Trains Running

The basis of the system is that no train shall run on the single line section without carrying the token. On our layout, if you forget to pick up the token you simply go round again and pick it up on the next loop. If you don't have a loop then take a decision on the safest method to get the system working again.

3+ Trains Running

No train shall enter the single line section unless you are either carrying the token or you can see the token hanging on the catch pole at the start of the section. The last train into the section will pick up the token. The only chance of trains running in to each other are of trains travelling in the same direction .

Our token and pole.

Three train working - first loco through leaves the token.
