Before you
start

To help prepare yourself with the correct
materials and equipment, is a list of items which are essential.
It is not definative and assumes that you have such things as
pliers, screw drivers, a vice, safety glasses etc, and a sound
basic knowledge of safe workshop practices.
If in doubt ask us - or if you prefer, several owners who have built
their locos, have contact email addresses on the owners page.
Tools
- Large round File
- Small round file (5m dia holes to file) and a
square or triangular file
- 1.5mm HSS drill bits (more than 1 in case of
breakage + using as key pins) sugggest 4 no.
- 4.2mm HSS drill bit + 4mm tap
- 3.3mm HSS drill bit + 5mm tap.
- 5mm HSS drill bit
- 2 no. small clamps

- 8mm flat or ring spanner set (socket set saves the wrist)
- Crimp for spade and loop connectors.
- Good quality allen key (for 4mm grub screw)
- Drill - preferably a pillar drill complete with a drill

- Safety glasses
- Blow torch or gas ring
Materials
- 6mm wire flex. Preferably two colours for the battery
terminals, connector blocks, spade terminals, battery
connectors - RoR or 4qd.

- Battery leads - 600mm long - 1 red 1 black
- Front motor leads - 500mm- 1 red 1 black
- Rear - 150mm - 1 red 1 black
NB If battery isolator switch is to be fitted - two
large loop crimps (10mm bolt) - cut into red battery
lead.

- Flux and solder for soldering in bearings
- Metal to fabricate battery tray
- Various grades of wet and dry
- Car filler, paint etc.
- Two 12v batteries- see battery section for guidence notes
- these last three items are best bought from a local car
accessory shop
