Volunteer Opportunities
There’s a role for everyone
The club relies on people with all kinds of interests and abilities. Some members enjoy the practical side of running a railway, while others prefer helping with visitors, organisation or general upkeep.
There are plenty of ways to get involved, including:
- Train driving and guards
- Track and rolling stock maintenance
- Station duties and customer service
- Gardening and site upkeep
- Events and fundraising
- Administration, communications and general support
You don’t need to know everything before you join. We’re always happy to help new members learn, and support is available every step of the way.
Life as a Member
More than just running trains
Being part of Havering Miniature Railway Club means more than helping on public running days.
Members get involved in maintaining locomotives, caring for coaches and rolling stock, looking after the site, improving the railway and helping the club continue to grow. It’s a great way to spend time around trains, meet people and contribute to something that the local community genuinely enjoys.
Some members like the operating side of the railway. Others enjoy engineering, practical tasks, restoration work or helping keep things organised behind the scenes. Every role is important.

How It Works
We welcome people of all backgrounds and experience levels who have an interest in the railway and would like to get involved.
Open to all: You don’t need to be an expert. Enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to help are what matter most.
Support and guidance: New members are introduced to the club gradually and can learn from more experienced members.
Flexible involvement: Some people help regularly, while others get involved when they can. We understand that everyone has different commitments.
If you’d like to find out more about membership, the best thing to do is get in touch and tell us a little about yourself and how you’d like to be involved.
