Our Trains
Our 7¼-inch gauge railway is home to a varied collection of locomotives and rolling stock, from live steam engines to powerful battery-electric locomotives and even miniature trams.
Most of the trains you see at Lodge Farm Park are privately owned by club members and supporters, who generously make them available for use on public running days.
With such a varied fleet, you never quite know what might be at the front of your train when you visit.
Bluey
A reliable electric locomotive, perfect for pulling long trains around the park. Powerful, dependable and great fun.
The name has a rather simple origin: after the original steeple-cab locomotive was painted blue, it became known as the “blue loco” — which was eventually shortened to Bluey.
Class 66 - Evening Star
Evening Star is the newest locomotive to join the railway and is owned by the club chairman. Built as an impressively detailed miniature of GBRf’s real-life Class 66 Evening Star, it brings a little bit of the modern mainline railway to Lodge Farm Park.
With its GBRf-inspired livery, impressive pulling power and extraordinary attention to detail, Evening Star has quickly become one of the most distinctive locomotives in our fleet.
Gwendoline
Gwendoline is a live-steam Feldbahn-style locomotive built by Station Road Steam in 2017.
Unlike our battery locomotives, a steam engine requires plenty of preparation before it can take to the track. It can take around an hour to raise steam and prepare Gwendoline for service, with more work required once the day's running is finished.
Red Tram
Not every train at Lodge Farm Park looks like a locomotive.
The Red Tram arrived in a derelict condition and was subsequently restored to working order, complete with a new motor controller and conductor's bell.
It provides covered accommodation and can carry a driver and five passengers.
Green Tram
Built around a sit-astride coach design, the Green Tram is powered by eight small electric motors and can operate either on its own or with additional matching coaches.
Its seating arrangement also makes it particularly useful for driver training, allowing an experienced supervisor to sit immediately behind a trainee driver.
David
David is a steam-outline electric locomotive powered by three large motors and four batteries.
Built in Romford by Ride on Railways, the locomotive is named in memory of David Middleton. Its number also carries a personal connection, incorporating David's date of birth and the shed code for the Immingham and Grimsby area where he grew up.
Goliath
A dependable workhorse of the railway, Goliath is loosely inspired by the Captain Howey locomotive of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway.
Powered by two large electric motors, Goliath was manufactured locally in Romford by Ride on Railways.
Merlod
Merlod is a compact but powerful locomotive driven by two electric motors.
Its name is Welsh for pony, a reference to Tony, the last pit pony to work at Pontypool before retiring in 1999. The sideways driving position also gives the driver a good view along the train and of the passengers behind.
Class 08
Our miniature Class 08 is modelled on one of Britain's most recognisable diesel shunters.
It is finished to represent the former Liverpool Street pilot, once used to shunt Norwich coaching stock at the London terminus. The miniature locomotive was produced by Compass House and is privately owned.
Glasgow Tram
Our Glasgow Tram is a beautifully detailed miniature recreation of a classic Glasgow Corporation double-deck tram. The model was built by a skilled model maker in the Netherlands, remarkably constructed in the loft of their home. Despite its compact size, the tram captures the distinctive character of the full-size Glasgow trams in miniature.
Space aboard is particularly limited, with room for just one driver and one passenger, so the Glasgow Tram is not normally used during our public running days. From time to time, however, the club holds special events where visitors are given the rare opportunity to ride as the tram's only passenger, making a journey aboard it a rather unique experience.
